A Conversation with Alex Hall

We sat down with Olympian, X-Games and World Cup freeskier Alex Hall to discuss his newest limited edition ski, the Studio 1 A-Hall, and plans for the future.

Explosive energy flows through your skiing, and the design of this limited edition Studio 1, 'Something Special'. Alongside your wildly successful 'Magma' film series, why does this specific aesthetic appeal to you?

I love the aesthetic of my new ski because it's a clean, simple design. But we added a twist with the volcano, incorporating the magma vibe into it. Plus, I love the base. It's a really unique base on the ski, and it pops in photos, videos, and anytime you're catching air.

We're super excited to see you kill it on the global stage on these skis. What was your favorite part about designing them?

I'm really proud of this design. My favorite part about designing these skis is definitely the whole creative process. It's cool to see the background of what goes into making skis and designing them. It’s a pretty long process, but it's fun to be a part of. We go through a ton of different ideas and then hopefully boil it down to one that I really like. This one turned out really cool, so I'm excited to release it for the world.

Freeskiing is a solitary sport at times — who’s always in your corner, pushing you to go further?

There have been so many people in my career who have helped me in freeskiing and life in general. Tons of friends—too many to mention—and my close family, who helped me a lot when I was younger by believing in me. Now, the friends I travel with every day help support me and keep the sport as fun as it is.

You’ve conquered so much from the Olympics to the X Games and beyond. What’s next for A Hall—more 'Magma' projects, or maybe building a secret base in a volcano?

For the upcoming season and next few seasons, I'm looking forward to filming, pushing myself, pushing my skiing, and having fun with it, surrounded by people I enjoy skiing with. Hopefully, I'll film a couple more video projects. I'd love to do more street skiing, keep exploring the backcountry, and progress my competition skiing while pushing the creative side. I'm just trying to stay busy, keep enjoying it, and take it one day at a time.

You’ve been in front of the camera for a while now—any blooper moments or ridiculous outtakes you can share from filming over the years?

There have been too many awesome moments to remember while filming over the years, whether with Faction or the Magma boys. There’s always funny stuff going down, funny bloopers, and a lot of good memories. One that stands out is when we were waiting for sunset on a mountain peak, and a weather front came in that wasn’t going to let us go without a fight. We had to wait through a massive lightning storm under a tiny rock on this super exposed peak. It was just Owen, Hunter, and me, and I legitimately thought we were going to die for a bit. A lightning bolt struck right above our heads! But we ended up waiting out the storm and finally got our sunset session. The light popped at the end of the night, so that was pretty damn cool."
