ROOTS CARBON CALCULATOR

As a Collective, we are committed to inspiring the next generation of skiers to connect with nature and change the game of skiing to actively protect the natural world.

We acknowledge that film productions produce carbon emissions that ultimately have an impact on our playground. Therefore, we have taken action to ensure the production of Roots is conscientious of our environment, as well as learnings to take forward and reduce the environmental impact on future products.

As a collective, we are committed to inspiring the next generation of skiers to connect with nature and change the game of skiing to actively protect the natural world.

We acknowledge that film productions produce a lot of carbon emissions that ultimately have an impact on our playground. Therefore, we have taken retrospective action to ensure the production of Roots is conscientious of our environment, as well as learnings to take forward and reduce the environmental impact on future products.

Moving forward, we will use this information to guide our decisions to ensure our films adopt a climate first approach.

    1. Emissions Calculation

We worked with Albert, the home of environmental sustainability for film and TV, by uploading all information relating to our carbon emissions to their carbon calculator, from travel and accommodation, to food consumption, post-production and even the calculated emissions of each chairlift ride. This enabled us to understand the carbon footprint of the film production. In areas where we had to estimate emissions, we always tried to over-estimate., The result: our film produced an estimated 44.47 tones of CO2 emissions, the equivalent to 5.4 American homes' yearly energy use, EPA, . Here is a breakdown of our emissions relating to the production of Roots:

    2. Climate Neutral Production

A Climate Neutral project refers to one that has matched the quantity of CO2 produced by sequestering carbon or funding projects that will avoid using non-renewable resources such as carbon. As a result of our due diligence, we are proud to state that our third feature film Roots is officially credited as a climate neutral production. Click here for our official climate neutral breakdown.

Following our emission calculations with Albert, we teamed up with ClimatePartner to offset our emissions, as we wanted our investment to support renewable energy sources. Due to the uncertainties related to carbon emission calculations, ClimatePartner added a 20% safety margin to our estimates to ensure all and more of our emissions were offset. Our investment contributed to offsetting 54 tonnes of CO2.

THE PROJECT: WIND ENERGY - SALODI, INDIA

Thanks to ClimatePartner, we were able to support a Gold Standard offsetting scheme that funds a wind energy project in the heart of the Thar Desert in India. The energy generated by the wind farm helps avoid 33, the project also supports a number of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, promoting social & economic sustainability.

    3. 1% For The Planet Donations

Our Roots world tour took us all over the world, reaching thousands of people across 6 different continents. During our events we partnered with 1% for the Planet and Outdoor F.U.T.U.R.E for our world premiere events. Outdoor F.U.T.U.R.E is a diverse coalition dedicated to supporting underserved youths across the USA with meaningful outdoor recreational and educational opportunities. During our world premieres we raised more than 10, with 100% of the proceeds going towards Outdoor F.U.T.U.R.E, as well as 1% of all film ticket sales going to 1% for the Planet.

We also recognise the additional carbon emissions involved in our film tour. To reduce our footprint as much as possible, our team members opted for the most sustainable mode of travel, train or car over plane, whenever possible. Where air travel was unavoidable, these emissions will be included in our annual carbon footprint and offset accordingly.

    4. Looking Forward

Roots being certified Climate Neutral is our first step towards ensuring rigorous sustainability targets throughout our films and media content. Moving forward, our aim will be to actively reduce our emissions wherever possible and offset what we cannot reduce. This will allow us to pursue our goal of not only achieving future Climate Neutral certification but also Albert Certification.

Albert Certification is an accreditation that requires thorough and consistent sustainability efforts from the onset of film production. It is a highly-regarded and comprehensive system that serves as a sustainability benchmark for media productions.

We as a Collective care about producing award-winning films with a sustainable mindset, that showcase not only our roster of talent, but also highlight our deep respect and admiration for our mountainous playground.
